1
Do not pile mulch against tree trunks — this creates "mulch volcanoes" that rot the bark and invite disease.
2
Cedar and cypress mulch naturally repel insects. Pine bark breaks down faster and adds acidity to soil.
3
Mulch suppresses weed seeds but not established weeds. Remove existing weeds before applying.
Foire aux questions
How many bags of mulch equal one cubic yard?▼
A standard 2 cubic foot bag of mulch: you need 13.5 bags to make 1 cubic yard. For 3 cubic foot bags, you need 9 bags per yard. Our calculator shows both bag sizes in the results.
How thick should I spread mulch?▼
A depth of 2 to 3 inches is ideal for most landscape beds. This depth suppresses weeds, retains soil moisture, and regulates soil temperature without suffocating plant roots.
How often should mulch be replaced?▼
Wood mulch typically breaks down over 1 to 2 seasons. You can either completely replace it or "fluff" the existing layer with a rake and add 1 to 2 inches of fresh mulch on top annually.
How much does mulch weigh per cubic yard?▼
Wood mulch is the lightest landscaping material. One cubic yard of shredded wood mulch weighs approximately 400–700 lbs (0.2–0.35 tons) when dry, making it easy to haul in a standard pickup truck.
