1

Install a weed barrier (landscape fabric) beneath all river rock to prevent weeds from growing up through the stones.

2

River rock does not decompose, so it is a zero-maintenance alternative to wood mulch in hot climates.

3

For dry creek beds, mix small (1-3 inch) and large (3-5 inch) rocks for a natural, realistic appearance.

Preguntas Frecuentes

How much river rock do I need?
For a decorative layer, plan for 2 to 3 inches of depth. For a dry creek bed or drainage project, you need 4 to 6 inches. Enter your area dimensions above for the exact cubic yards and tons required.
How much does river rock weigh per cubic yard?
One cubic yard of river rock weighs approximately 2,700 lbs (1.35 tons). Because it is so heavy, large orders must be delivered by dump truck. A standard pickup truck can safely carry about 1 cubic yard.
Is river rock or mulch better?
River rock is better in hot, dry climates or high-traffic areas because it is permanent and does not decompose. Wood mulch is better for garden beds as it breaks down and adds nutrients to the soil. River rock does not insulate soil as well as mulch.
What size river rock is best for landscaping?
1 to 3 inch river rock is the most popular size for ground cover and garden beds. 3 to 5 inch rocks are ideal for dry creek beds and drainage. Larger boulders (6+ inches) are used as accent pieces.
